Indicator 69: Communities in Partnership With State Government

Why This Is Important
A priority of the Governor's Children's Cabinet is to expand the number of partnerships
between state government agencies and local communities working to improve the
well-being of children and families. This indicator tracks the number of partnerships
occurring as part of five major community-based initiatives:
- Communities for Children/Communities of Promise
- School-Based Service Learning
- Child Abuse and Neglect Councils
- Healthy Community Coalitions
- Office of Substance Abuse OneME Coalitions
Where We Stand
Reports from state agency program managers indicate that at last reported count (2003):
- There are 71 local communities participating in the Communities for
Children/Communities of Promise initiative, an increase of ten communities
since the first edition of Maine Marks.
- The total number of School-Based Service Learning sites is 23; of these, 8 are
Learning Connections sites, 12 are Learning in Deed sites, and 3 are KIDS Net sites.
- There are Child Abuse and Neglect Councils for each county in Maine.
- There are 22 Healthy Community Coalitions established across the state.
The Office of Substance Abuse currently has 23 funded OneME Substance Abuse
Prevention Project Coalitions.
