Indicator: 74 - Voter Turnout
Fully Developed

Why This Is Important

Voter turnout is a fairly good indicator of participation in democracy. Voting is one way to model good citizenship in a community.

Percentage of Voting Age who Voted in Presidential Elections

Where We Stand

Nationally, voter turnout has dropped slowly since 1960. In the 2000 election, an estimated 67% of Maine people over age 18 voted for the office of President of the United States. Maine's rate was 16 percentage points above the national rate of 51%.

Maine led the nation in voter turnout in the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections. It ranked second only to Minnesota in the 2000 presidential vote.
