Indicator: 74 - Voter Turnout

Why This Is Important
Voter turnout is a fairly good indicator of participation in democracy.
Voting is one way to model good citizenship in a community.

Where We Stand
Nationally, voter turnout has dropped slowly since 1960. In the
2000 election, an estimated 67% of Maine people over age 18 voted
for the office of President of the United States. Maine's rate was
16 percentage points above the national rate of 51%.
Maine led the nation in voter turnout in the 1992 and 1996 presidential
elections. It ranked second only to Minnesota in the 2000 presidential
vote.
Data Sources and Context
The data is from the Maine Economic Growth Council's Measures of
Growth 2000, available on-line at http://www.mdf.org.
Those figures come from a Maine Development Foundation analysis
of data from the Maine Secretary of State.
