2001 Maine Marks

Indicator: 68 - Communities in Partnership With State Government

To Be Developed

Why This Is Important

A priority of the Governor's Children's Cabinet is to expand the number of partnerships between state government agencies and local communities working to improve the well-being of children and families. This indicator tracks the number of partnerships occurring as part of four major community-based initiatives:

  • Communities for Children/Communities of Promise
  • School-Based Service Learning
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Councils
  • Healthy Community Coalitions

Preliminary reports from state agency program managers received last year indicate that:

  • There were 61 local communities participating in the Communities for Children/Communities of Promise initiative. The total number of towns involved in this prevention initiative was 221.
  • The total number of School-Based Service Learning sites was 23; of these, 8 were Learning Connections sites, 12 were Learning in Deed sites, and 3 were KIDS Net sites.
  • There were 16 Child Abuse and Neglect Councils in Maine, one for each county.
  • There were 20 Healthy Community Coalitions established across the state.

More development work will be done on this indicator and a more complete description provided in the 2003 Maine Marks Report.
